OPERATION OF A PILOT-SCALE SUBMERGED COMBUSTION MELTER

A pilot-scale submerged combustion melter with a nominal continuous pull rate up to 1 ton/h has been designed, assembled, and operated. Tests with E glass, alumina borosilicate glass, and soda-lime glass melts have evaluated impacts of operating parameters such as firing rate, firing pattern, melt temperature, and pull rate on glass homogeneity, volatilization, and other important glass properties. Results are presented along with design philosophy and technical approach for this innovative glass melting system. Comparisons are made between testing results and CFD modeling predictions. Fluent CFD software has been updated specifically to carry out simulations of the SCM unit.
