Fermi surface evolution in cuprates: an angle-resolved photoemission study

We report angle-resolved photoemission measurements on an insulating CuO2 plane compound, Ca2CuO2Cl2. This so-called parent compound to the high-ir, superconductors is a Mott insulator. We observe that the lowest energy feature loses its spectral weight as it crosses the approximate position where band theory predicts the existence of the Fermi surface. Complemented with an analysis from metallic Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212), this suggests that the loss of spectral weight is due to the remnants of the non-interacting Fermi surface. Further analysis shows a d-wave-like dispersion along this 'Fermi surface' contour that is destroyed in the insulator. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
