Structural Design of Rockfall Protection Embankments: Can a Static Approach Solve a Dynamic Problem?

摘要
In Switzerland up to now the design of rock fall protection embankments is based on the equivalent force method by using a formula which was developed for rock sheds. This formula as well as several other approaches established for the calculation of an equivalent static force due to an impact have been analyzed and checked for their suitability for the design of rock fall protection embankments. The present course of action does not agree with the circumstances of an impact of a bloc onto an embankment. Therefore a simple formulation is proposed based on conservation of momentum and inelastic collision.
