Poverty as a significant problem of Latin America

In a global economy, where human capital is critical to competitiveness, inequalities which result in a failure to develop people's skills and knowledge can actually slow down the rate of economic growth and weaken the poverty-reducing impact of the growth that does occur. Poverty reduction thus requires the implementation of development strategies that aim at simultaneously achieving fast sustained growth rates and more equal societies.
