Al2TiO5 -: New contributions to its preparation via the sol-gel technique

Fine powders of aluminium titanate (beta-Al2TiO5) are conventionally prepared by starting with a mixture of Al- and Ti-alkoxides in the molar ratio of 2:1, hydrolysis and heating the precipitate to temperatures > approximate to 1300 degrees C. We applied an alternative route and replaced the mixture of alkoxides by the novel heterometallic alkoxide Al2Ti((OPr)-Pr-i)ra. X-ray diffraction powder patterns of sintered precipitates reveal no deviation in phase formation and composition from conventionally prepared samples. Precipitates heated at 700 and 1000 degrees C for 14 h show binary phases of TiO2 (anatase, rutile) and TiO2 (rutile) + alpha-Al2O3 respectively. No metastable Al2O3-phases (gamma,delta, theta) are detected. Al2TiO5-formation is observed at temperatures > 1300 degrees C. Shortening of sintering time to 1.5 h exhibits same phases with lower intensities of X-ray peaks.
