Fracture toughness measurements using two single-edge notched bend test methods in a single specimen

SE(B) testing was conducted at room temperature on an X70 pipe material. Two toughness methods - ASTM E1820 and the double- clip gauge method - were combined in a single specimen to experimentally compare the J-conversion CTOD of ASTM E1820 with the geometrically-estimated CTOD under identical conditions. The results show that the difference in definition of CTOD strongly influences CTOD estimations. The paper discusses details of the experiment and the results.
