We have developed a four-dimensional (4D) x-ray microcomputed tomography (CT) system that can obtain time-lapse CT volumes in real time. The system consists of a high-speed sample rotation system and a high-frame-rate x-ray imager, which are installed at a synchrotron radiation x-ray beamline. As a result of system optimization and introduction of a "zoom resolution" procedure, a real-time 4D CT movie with a frame rate of 30 was obtained with a voxel size of 2.5 mu m using 10 keV x-rays.
