摘要
There is no compelling etymology for Greek nu beta rho iota s. This paper argues that nu beta rho iota s goes back directly to Proto-Indo-European acrostatically inflected i-stem abstract noun *H(x)io/o(H-2)g(w)-ri- 'power', internally derived from *H(x)iaH(2)g(w)-ro- 'mighty' probably continued in Greek by alpha beta rho oss-; the root is that of eta beta eta, lith. (pa)-jega), with the loss of laryngeal according to the Weather-rule and change of o to v in labial environment (Cowgill's Law).
