Estimation of fracture toughness of anisotropic rocks by SCB test and visualization of fracture by means of X-ray CT

摘要
In order to investigate the influence of anisotropic characteristics of rock andwater vapor pressure of surrounding environment on fracture toughness, a series of Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) tests under various water vapor pressures were performed. The rock used in the test was two kinds of granite which is known as anisotropic rock. The measurement of elastic wave velocity and observation of thin section of this rock were performed to make clear orientation of inherent micro cracks. The two types of test specimen were prepared based on the orientation of micro cracks in this study. It was shown that fracture toughness of granitewas dependent on orientation of grain boundaries andwater vapor pressure of the surrounding environment. Furthermore, crack propagation was discussed based on the images of fracture visualized within rock specimen by means of X-ray CT.
