摘要
Introduction: Concomitantly with the incidence of obesity, there was also a reduction in sleeping time and/or the change from day shift to night shift in order to meet the demands of the labor market. Objective: The main objective of the present study was to compare whether there is a difference in body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood glucose between night and day workers.Materials and Methods: A descriptive, qualitative study was carried out, with transversal temporality and census sampling, which evaluated anthropometric, biochemical and dietary parameters of night and day workers. Forty-four workers were analyzed, of which 19 worked during the day and 25 at night. Results: Night workers habitually had night meals more frequently compared to day workers, especially considering supper, in which approximately 82% and 18% (p < 0.001) frequently consumed this meal, respectively. Of the night workers, 19 of the 25 were above the BMI considered adequate, in which 14 of the 25 had their sleep classified as poor and disturbed. In relation to day workers, 10 of the 19 individuals were above the BMI considered adequate and reported disturbed and poor sleep quality. There was no worsening in fasting blood glucose in night workers. Conclusion: Night workers, in addition to having night meals more frequently, tended to have a high BMI to the point of overweight, with the majority of the sample having sleep classified as poor and disturbed.
