The expulsion of the Jesuits from colonial Iberian America: A comparative study of the Schools of Cordoba and Rio de Janeiro

The eight-year gap between the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portuguese America (1759) and from Spanish America cannot be seen as a factor of exclusion in a comparative analysis of both realities. On the contrary, similar events that happened in the respective Iberian empires, as well as the procedures implemented by the governments of Joseph I of Portugal and Charles III of Spain, allow and encourage research works that approach these two countries. This article aims at conducting a comparative study of how the Portuguese and the Spanish Crowns managed Jesuits' assets in the moment subsequent to their eviction, with a view to highlighting similarities and/or differences in the actions taken by both monarchies. The analysis focuses on the examination of the Schools of Rio de Janeiro and of Cordoba.
