Use of HSS rolls in a hot strip mill

The yield and the economic efficiency of hot strip production depend to a high degree on the surface quality of the rolled hot strip and on the productivity of the rolling process. The rolls in the roughing and finishing mill are, as a rule, of indefinite chill and high-chromium type. Use of these roll types, however, entails roll changes every few hours because of the increasing wear and the roughness of the roll surface. The installation of HSS rolls is intended to reduce this loss of productivity caused by such frequent roll changes. The benefits expected from HSS rolls for the production of hot strip include an improved surface quality of the rolled material, an enhanced yield because of lengthier roll service times, and cost savings as a result of the reduced wear and of the surface finish of the rolls.
