Imagine a situation where airlines, customs and immigration authorities and airport staff work together using shared automation to move air travellers through their journeys with a simple one-step check at airports. This is where Simplifying Passenger Travel (SPT) comes into play. The aim of the SPT is to improve the passenger travel experience by replacing repetitive checks of passengers and their documents with a new streamlined system using biometrics technologies. The new system will collect the information once and then share it electronically with subsequent service providers to clear the travellers through their entire journey. This paper gives an overview on Simplifying Passenger Travel, the latest developments of pilot schemes implemented in the international arenas, the initiative projects contemplated at HKIA and the way forward of the SPT Programme.
