In Mexico, as in all the world, the youth unemployment rate is higher than the overall, and this relationship doesn't change with the economic cycle. For Mexico, we found that the youth group with lesser education and income shows lower unemployment rate compared to the youth with higher and better socioeconomic situation. We develop a theoretical model to explain the existence of an important voluntary component in the youth unemployment rate. We claim that there is an important wage mismatch between these two groups. We estimate two logit models to empirically prove it.
