Formation of vertical and horizontal dust vortexes in an RF-discharge plasma

摘要
The results of experimental observations of two types of dust vortices (vertical and horizontal) in the presence of an additional electrode in a planar radio frequency (rf) discharge are presented. It is shown that the occurrence of these vortices can be explained by dissipative instability in the dust cloud due to a dust charge gradient, This gradient occurs due to the disturbance of electroneutrality or the variation of electron temperature caused by the extra electrode in the rf-plasma. The observed motion of dust particles has been compared with the results of molecular dynamic simulations. Good qualitative and quantitative agreement was found.
