Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor modulators: Recent advances and therapeutic potential

The concept of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as targets with therapeutic potential is now well established, and has been the subject of several recent reviews [1-4]. Numerous publications continue to provide evidence for a role of nAChRs in the etiology and potential treatment of neurological diseases. This review will focus on recent developments supporting nAChR ligands as therapeutics in diverse diseases. Such developments include progression of compounds into the clinic, characterization in behavioral models and the discovery of new ligands with distinctive pharmacology, structure or therapeutic potential. © 2005 Elsevier Inc.
