The article reviews the debate about the model of "cosmopolitan democracy" which was developed and promoted by Daniele Archibugi and David Held in a series of publications since the middle of the 90ies. The main intention of the concept is to demonstrate the necessity and possibility to democratise an expanding global political space. The review focuses on the challenges of globalisation for democratic theory, the problem of establishing political community in deterritorialised space and on the various reform options which have been proposed by liberal and communitarian approaches to democratic theory.
