摘要
Solar still desalination is one of the predominately used desalination techniques in solar applications. In this study, the performance of the still has been enhanced using conch shells inside the basin and a coating of chlorophyll pigment on the glass cover. This was then compared with two solar stills, one of which had its conch shells painted black, still glass cover coated with chlorophyll pigment, and another of which did not have either shell painted black or coating on still cover. The still glass cover was angled at a 30 degrees to ensure the maximum amount of solar irradiation collection. The results revealed that at a water depth of 20 mm, as the temperature of the shell increased, the rate of freshwater generation also increased. A maximum of 1.20 L/h of water was generated when the shell temperature was 73 degrees C. The output rate of still was increased by 15 % when compared to standard still operation. The still with chlorophyll coating produced output, 60 % higher than the solar still without coating. In comparison with the solar still that does not have chlorophyll coating and black paint on the shells, the production was reduced by approximately 25 %. According to the economic analysis, the payback period of approximately 2 months was achieved with the current experimental setup. The water quality analysis revealed that the water collected met the world health organization's (WHO) pH requirements .
