Paper mill results on the application and implementation of high-temperature supercalendering of coated paper

After several years of development work, a major producer of coated paper in Europe has applied an external induction heating system to their supercalender to attain significantly higher steel roll surface temperatures and control of temperature profiles of the steel roll. The primary goals were to achieve increased productivity on speed limited grades, control the cross-direction gloss profile, define if new gloss grade levels were attainable and document any other potential benefits such as cross-direction caliper control. The use of higher temperature steel rolls in many calenders has become a normal practice to achieve improved sheet properties and higher levels of productivity. This paper will review the results achieved with a profiling external induction heating system on an eleven roll supercalender producing a single-sided coated paper. These results far surpassed all the performance expectations of the project and have generated tremendous interest by papermakers around the world. The paper will also explore the future of this new technology and its potential application in other supercalendering operations. The Advanced Finishing Technology (AFT) process control techniques implemented to coordinate and optimize the supercalender process will be discussed within this paper.
