Level of sport activities after total hip arthroplasty

The operation of total hip replacement (THR) has steadily increased incidence, covering, in addition, more and more young patients with higher life expectancy and functional demand. Given the benefits from sport and the desire of some patients to maintain this type of activity to a satisfactory level after the operation, we set out to understand what is the state of the art on this topic. Evaluating clinical outcome and the level of sport reached by a group of patients operated on THR, we concluded that in operated patients sport is possible and desirable, but there are not yet the means to refer patients with scientific criteria to a type of activity rather than to another. More complex and multi-disciplinary studies are needed to fill this void and provide a more complete rehabilitation for our patients.
