Research on performance evaluation of ethernet and ControlNet

摘要
In this paper, we analyzed the mechanisms of medium access control (MAC) layer of both Ethernet and ControlNet. The Ethernet bus with carrier sense multiple access, with collision detection (CSMA/CD) and the ControlNet with token-passing bus are also compared in detail. Their transmission time and data coding efficiency are emulated in MATLAB. The emulated result shows that the transmission time for Ethernet is less than ControlNet, especially the transmit time is constant for the small data size. Also the result shows that the data coding efficiency for ControlNet is, better than Ethernet when the data size is small, and they are almost the same when the data size is large.
