Aquifer vulnerability and bacteriological contamination hazard on Mar del Plata (Argentina) suburban area

The presence of faecal coliforms in groundwater used for domestic purposes has been detected in suburban areas of Mar del Plata, Argentina. This phenomenon takes place due to the migration of leaks from cesspools to nearby wells. Aquifer vulnerability is associated not only to hydrogeological. features and contaminant load but also on the characteristics of wells and to the distance between these and the cesspools in question. The negative impact that this has on public health adds to other social problems such as poverty and lack of education resulting in an increased social vulnerability of the affected groups. Thus, the incorporation of environmental priorities in the management of water resources becomes of utmost importance.
