Synthesis and Characterization of New Sulfonamide-Containing Anthraquinone Dyes and Their Applications to Polylactic Acid Fabric

4-Amino-N,N-diethylbenzenesulfonamide 5a and 4-Amino-N-butyl-benzenesulfonamide 5b were synthesized from aniline by using a four-step process. Then two water-soluble sulfonate-containing intermediates 7a and 7b were synthesized by use of bromaminic acid with 5a and 5b. After desulfonation of 7a and 7b, two hydrophobic sulfonamide-containing anthraquinone dyes 8a and 8b were prepared. Their structures were confirmed by FTIR, H-1 NMR and Mass Spectrometry. Then the sulfonamide-containing anthraquinone dyes were applied to polylactic acid fabrics by exhaust dyeing at 110 degrees C, in which dyebath pH was adjusted to 7. We conclude that the sulfonamide-containing anthraquinone dyes exhibite good dye exhaustion and fastnesses to washing, sublimation and light on polylactic acid fabrics.
