The number of total shoulder arthroplasties has increased exponentially over the last ten years, creating a more prominent role for revision shoulder arthroplasty in the future. Advances in shoulder arthroplasty such as glenoid resurfacing and reverse shoulder arthroplasty have dramatically increased the indications for surgery, further increasing the burden of revision shoulder surgery in the years to come. Recognition of the problems associated with the failed shoulder arthroplasty is necessary for successful revision surgery and numerous reconstructive techniques are necessary for restoration of soft tissue and bony deficiencies. In this article we discuss the indications, techniques and outcomes of revision shoulder surgery.
