摘要
This article discusses the design of a 2D Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure embedded to the profile of a rectangular microstrip antenna for Ultra Wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed EBG structures that introduced to the antenna design are based on inclusions of 3 x 5 unit cells etched from the patch and backed with EBG defects and a partial ground plane. The patch and the ground plane are based copper layer mounted on a 26 x 30 mm(2) Rogers RT 5880 substrate of 1 mm thickness with a relative permittivity (epsilon(r)) of 2.2 and a loss tangent (tan) of 0.00134. A systematic study is investigated based on numerical simulations to arrive to the optimal design and realize the effects of the EBG structures on the antenna performance. The conducted numerical simulations are based on Finite Integral Technique (FIT) and Finite Element Method (FEM) algorithms using CST MWS and HFSS formulations, respectively. The antenna performance in terms of S-11 and gain are measured from 0.5 GHz up to 20 GHz. The obtained results, numerically and experimentally, show that the antenna provides a realized gain around 5 dBi over the frequency band of interest and maximally about 5.8 dBi at 10 GHz. The antenna shows an excellent matching over frequency band from 3.2 GHz up to 18.5 GHz with a separate mode around 2.7 GHz. Finally, acceptable agreements are achieved between the measured and simulated results. (C) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
