Open systems-based computing system and networks have been increasingly depended upon by organizations to support their computer-based information systems. But with this dependence comes system and data security threats. Solutions have been proposed but the lack of clearly defined standards is slowing down the globalization of the electronic trade. The X/Open Baseline Security 96 standard defined by the Open Group is a platform-neutral product standard defining a basic, standard set of security facility and reasonable and safe default security parameters based on the X/Open Baseline Services Specification (XBSS), with security starting at the system level. It addresses the standardization and security problems for the distributed computing environments.
