Strengthening of glulam beams with externally bonded FRP laminates

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rods and laminates are being successfully used worldwide for strengthening of existing concrete and masonry structures. FRP-based strengthening systems have a good potential for application to timber structures. They can be used either to enhance flexural and shear strength of existing structural elements or to decrease the size of new elements for a given required strength. This paper presents the first results of a currently ongoing research project aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of FRP laminates and rods for flexural and shear strengthening of glulam beams. Seven simply supported beams have been tested thus far, of which two were unstrengthened to provide a baseline comparison, whereas the others were strengthened with Carbon FRP sheets using different patterns. Flexural strengthening was implemented by bonding the CFRP sheet to the tension face or between two laminations of the beams. Test results are presented and discussed in this paper.
