Particulate Matter Emissions from a Diesel Passenger Car Fuelled with Oxygenated Fuels

The effects of synthetic diesel fuel oxygenates on a Euro 4 diesel passenger car particulate matter (PM) emissions were studied under the NEDC cycle. Six different oxygenates from different chemical families were used. The tests carried out proved a favorable influence of oxygenated compounds on PM emissions. They were effective at a low concentration of 5% v/v. The PM emissions reduction depended not only on the oxygen content in fuel but also on the other factors, among which the type of oxygenate is very important. The results of the experiments shown that carbonates as oxygenated fuel components reduced PM emissions more effectively (by up to 39% during the NEDC) than malcates (by up to 32%) and glycol ethers (by up to 16%).
