Similar to hip arthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis, the goal for total hip arthroplasty in the adolescent and young adult is to restore function and relieve pain. However, total hip arthroplasty in the young patient poses unique challenges given the anatomical deformities, higher physical demands, and increased likelihood for revision over the lifespan of these patients. Extensive preoperative planning must be undertaken to ensure proper surgical approach and implant selection. Outcomes are overall favorable with the use of modern implants and total hip arthroplasty should be regarded as a viable primary treatment option and not solely a salvage procedure.
