Databases generated by Web robots vary in content, organization, comprehensiveness, and search features. This paper provides an overview robot-generated databases, and comparable tools for resource discovery. The robots discussed include Aliweb, Harvest, Jumpstation II, Lycos, OpenText Index, Webcrawler, and the World Wide Web Worm. Of these robot-generated databases, Lycos appears to be strongest system overall. It offers comprehensive coverage of the WWW, and efficient indexing scheme, and impressive search and display features. Both OpenText Web Index and WebCrawler provide full- or near full-text indexing of document, though coverage is not as extensive as Lycos.
