Silicone PIP joint arthroplasty has traditionally been the treatment of choice for arthritis of this joint. However, recent implants made of improved biomaterials (pyrolytic carbon, metal and polyethylene) hold promise as a means of treating posttramatic, degenerative, and inflammatory arthritic disease of the PIP joint. Early results are encouraging and compare favorably with prior reports of implants made of different materials. With longer-term follow-up, the validity of these newer joint arthroplasties can be verified. Copyright 2007 by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
