A note on the head-movement analysis of long-distance reflexives

One of the most influential generative accounts of long-distance reflexives is the head-movement analysis developed by Cole, Hermon, and Sung (Cole et al. 1990; Cole and Sung 1994), essentially following work by Battistella (1989), and drawing largely on selected data from Chinese. The aim of this paper is to point out some of the empirical and conceptual problems for this analysis, which have received little attention in the generative literature on long-distance reflexivization.
