A Location-Aware Routing Metric (ALARM) for multi-hop, multi-channel wireless mesh networks

The importance of suitable link-aware routing metrics for multi-hop (mesh) wireless networks is well-established. Channel-to-link assignments impact the distribution of co-channel links and contribute to inter-flow and intra-flow interference. In this paper we present A new Location-Aware Routing Metric (ALARM) that better captures the resulting co-channel interference as a function of channel assignments. The link metrics used are sensitive to the location of nearby co-channel links that are within interference or carrier sensing range; these can be pre-calculated and used with any routing algorithm. The performance of ALARM is compared with Weighted Cumulative Expected Transmission Time metric (WCETT) via OPNET over a comprehensive range of network parameters for linear and 2-D grid topologies.
