Meeting of goals by Sumitomo Chemicals (Tokyo) in the current fiscal year by the benefits of new drug and agchem products, by cost-cutting program, and a pickup in parts of the electronic business is discussed. The cost cutting at Sumitomo include staff reductions, a series of plant closures, and the formation of joint ventures including polyolefins and styrenics, to reduce fixed costs. The company is targeting production of polarizers for optical filmsfor LCDs. as well as polymethylmethacrylate extruded sheets for light guide panels. The company has new products under development which include novel household market products, as well as crop on crop technologies, including genetically modified soybeans.
