1,3-Dithian-5-one 1 undergoes a convenient pseudo-four-component combination with different aldehydes 2 and two equivalents of malononitrile 3 in aqueous medium and in the presence of triethylamine. Novel dithian-fused dicyanoanilines 4 are formed efficiently in the mixture within 2-3 h. Products which are formed in high yields and precipitate spontaneously in the reaction mixtures have the potential for fluorescence activity.
