摘要
The paper discusses the concepts of the SOUL/SPIRIT and their names in chosen languages as the basis for a mental category important in the European culture since at least the late 18th century and referring to the collective beings that are the nations, namely the category of 'the inner spiritual element of the national community'. The author uses language corpora and databases to investigate the entrenchment and salience of the concepts 'spirit of a nation' and 'soul of a nation' in contemporary discourses and texts in Polish, Czech, Russian, French, German and English. Special attention is paid to the naming of these concepts in French, Russian and Polish languages - and to the relations between the semantics of these expressions and cultural values and historical experiences of the nation in question.
