The Depiction of the 'Other Woman' in Travel Texts A Discourse-Linguistic Analysis

In this paper we will use discourse-linguistic methods to analyse how the 'other woman' is represented and staged in selected travel texts by the British writer Freya Stark (1892-1993) and by the Swiss writers Ella Maillart (1903-1997) and Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942). We will merge disciplinary perspectives from linguistics and literary studies in order to explore to what extent and under which conditions such merged perspectives can prove productive, and which discourse-linguistic approach is particularly appropriate when investigating the relation between discourse, power and knowledge in representations and enactments of 'other' cultures.
