Stability of the Suspensions of Al2O3 and ZrO2 Nano Powders

摘要
Preparation of homogeneously dispersed nanometer powder suspensions is the key step towards the high performance nano composite ceramic materials. In the present study, the suspension-of 1 vol% nano-Al2O3 and nano-ZrO2 in the non-aqueous ethyl alcohol solution were obtained via single steric stabilization using PEG dispersant and ethyl alcohol as the dispersive medium. Through adding PEG of different molecular weight, adjusting the amount of PEG and pH values of the suspension, highly dispersed and stable nano-Al2O3 and nano-ZrO2 in ethyl alcohol suspensions were achieved by optimizing the dispersion conditions. TEM observation showed that the particles were separated from each other absent of obvious particle agglomeration in the ZrO2 suspension. Therefore, the present process provides an effective mean to avoid the aggregation of the nano particles and their sedimentation that enables the formation of stable suspensions of the nano ceramic powders.
