Concept study for wind turbine with yaw bearing at the tower base

摘要
The feasibility and cost-benefit of a wind turbine with yawing tower is investigated. The original "bock" windmill design, which incorporated the yaw system into the tower base, is studied to see how it can be applied to modern wind turbines to save material. These savings, enabled by a load-oriented tower cross section, are evaluated in comparison to a modern tower with top-mounted yaw system. Additionally the yaw bearing and drive systems of modern towers are studied to see how economically they could be applied to the tower foot, which has significantly higher loading than the tower top. Results show that a profiled, yawing steel tower has tremendous potential to save material and solve transport problems, however, additional research is needed to develop an economical yaw bearing solution.
