Future coal-fired power plants

Around 38 % of the electricity is generated worldwide in coal-fired power plants. Many prognoses assume that this share will not change until 2020 even if electricity demand grows and natural gas as well as regenerative energies will increasingly add to electricity production. To stand competition, investment costs of coal-fired power plants must be diminished and efficiencies have to be raised with regard to CO2 emission reduction objectives. In the long-term perspective also CO2 removal concepts and sequestration should be considered by which means the CO2 emissions of coal-fired power stations could potentially be drastically reduced.
