Corrosion behaviour of 2124 aluminium alloy-silicon carbide metal matrix composites in sodium chloride environment

摘要
Aluminium alloy based particle reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) are being considered for a range of applications. Their mechanical properties have been investigated in detail, but more information al,out their corrosion resistance is needed. In this investigation, the corrosion behaviour of Silicon carbide particulates (SiCp)-2124 aluminium metal matrix composites was studied in 3wt% sodium chloride solution by means of electrochemical technique and optical microscope. The effects of weight percentages and particle size of silicon carbide particulates on corrosion behaviour of the composite were studied in NaCl and it was observed that corrosion rate increases linearly with the increasing weight percentage of SiCp. The corrosion rate of the MMC increases by increasing the size of SiC particles. Anodization improved corrosion resistance of the composites.
