The First Carlist War in the Russian Press

The present article pretends to analyze the image of the First Carlist War (1833-1840) in the Russian newspaper "Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti". The most relevant paper of the capital of the Russian empire regularly published news concerning the conflict in Spain. There were studied all the issues published between October 1833 and July 1840 (1955 issues). Based on the studied texts there are analyzed the frequency of mentions of the First Carlist War, the time between the main events of the conflict and their mention in the newspaper, the style of mentions of the Carlist movement, analytic publications concerning the Carlism, the accuracy of the information in the paper. Starting from the spring of 1834, the newspaper tried to be impartial in the description of the war; sometimes it was inclining toward the Carlists. The investigation is relevant for the study of the perception of the conflict by Russian society.
