摘要
Sheriffs are an elected group of law enforcement personnel that have significant impact on policy decisions. Unlike local police departments, they continue to be an understudied population despite this impact. The present study proposes a validated instrument for criminologists to measure law enforcement officials' opinions on firearm access and regulation. It continues previous published research on elected sheriffs' support for civilian gun rights in the state of Texas (Meitl et al. 2021) by examining potential effects of a broad range of county and constituency characteristics. Results show that, with only one exception, sheriffs' beliefs on gun ownership and access were stable across county characteristics, indicating that there is little appetite among these policy influencers to limit access to, and increase regulation of, firearms.
