摘要
Urban aquaponics is an innovative technique that com- bines aquaculture and hydroponics in a symbiotic and sustainable system, aiming to promote the production of healthy food in urban environments. This initia tive offers a practical and efficient solution to address the challenges of food security, environmental sustainabi- lity in cities, and a significant challenge stemming from urban population growth. Thus, we examine the tra- ditional vertical aquaponic system, which needs to be described and evaluated from the urban component to be implemented in limited spaces such as patios, rooftops, balconies, and community gardens, allowing the community to actively participate in the produc- tion of their own food. The result is to illustrate the importance and a series of significant benefits, such as the reduction and independence from conventional agriculture. Aquaponics uses much less water compa- red to traditional agriculture since water is recircula- ted in the system. It also eliminates the need for che- mical fertilizers, as nutrients come from the metabolic waste of the fish. Research and development led by Santo Tomas University, Bucaramanga section, repre- sent a significant contribution to the search for prac- tical and sustainable solutions to local and national challenges of food insecurity. The improvement in its prototype has the potential to ensure food security, waste management towards their utilization as new products, and the reduction of energy dependence, benefiting both local communities and the environ- ment. It is an inspiring example of how academic re- search can translate into tangible positive impacts on society and the environment.
