Squamous cell carcinoma of the rectum is a very rare histopathological entity and accounts for only about 0.1-0.3 % of all malignant rectal neoplasms. The exact etiology is unclear. Clinic and diagnosis are similar to those of rectal adenocarcinoma. There are no general recommendations or guidelines regarding therapy. The treatment options are based on those of rectal adenocarcinoma and anal squamous cell carcinoma, with primary chemoradiotherapy being the preferred treatment in recent years due to histopathological analogies to anal squamous cell carcinoma. The prognosis of rectal squamous cell carcinoma appears to be poorer than for adenocarcinoma.
