The electronic absorption spectra of tris(1,10-phenanthroline) iron(II) complex were measured using an opti-cally-transparent thin-layer spectroelectrochemical cell. The obtained spectra were subjected to higher-order derivative conversions up to the eighth order, and a broad absorption band in the UV region was separated into subpeaks. It was found that the shape of the derivative spectrum changed dramatically as the divalent complex was oxidized to trivalent by applying a positive potential. It is clear that the higher-order derivative conversion spectral method is also useful for analyzing the spectra of redox active metal complexes with relatively large conjugated systems.
