摘要
In this article, we intend to discuss the images of slavery in Brazil in the colonial period and in the First Empire through the analysis of the representations made by artists who accompanied the government of Mauricio de Nassau during the Dutch occupation of the Northeast of Brazil, from 1637 to 1644, and the Brazil portrayed by the French Mission artist Jean-Baptiste Debret, between 1816 and 1831. Such images were perpetrated in the popular imagination and have been constantly reprised, contributing to the founding of ethnocentric racism rooted in scientific and popular literature and leaving indelible traces in the country's cultural identity.
