A neuroscience perspective on interventional psychiatry

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the available information on Interventional Psychiatry, in order to present an overview of the technique from information published in the scientific literature from a neuroscience perspective. METHODS: In this bibliographic review (databases, websites and specialized journals) we selected descriptive and interpretative studies that evaluated the dimensions: characterization, types of techniques and application, related to Interventional Psychiatry. The databases evaluated were MEDLINE, PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, SciELO and LILACS. RESULTS: In the studies selected on the subject, the techniques currently used in Interventional Psychiatry were compared, observing differences in efficacy, risk, speed and durability of the therapeutic effects in psychiatric disorders. In addition, convergent mechanisms that promote neuromodulation and neuroplasticity are presented, as well as the challenges related to the implementation of this medical science. CONCLUSION: For the expanded implementation of Interventional Psychiatry in the country, interventions aimed at teaching and specialization of the technique will be necessary to promote its dissemination and implementation in mental health care services.
