To the Editor: The review by O'Grady (Sept. 21 issue)(1) regarding the prevention of central line (central venous catheter)-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) provides a useful reminder of proven strategies to prevent such infections. A cornerstone measure to limit the risk of CLABSI is to minimize the exposure to central venous catheters. As is noted in the review, among the provider characteristics that increase the risk of infection is the failure to remove catheters once they are no longer needed.
