Many of us may remember the 1989 movie Steel Magnolias, in which Julia Roberts played the role of someone with type 1 diabetes. As in the movie, at that time women with diabetes were discouraged from becoming pregnant because of poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Fortunately, we have come a long way since then, given the availability of new insulin analogues (long-acting and rapid-acting) and technological advances, including continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps, and automated insulin-delivery (also known as closed-loop) systems.(1) The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial also showed that intensive insulin therapy and patients' frequent self-monitoring of glucose levels . . .
